Castle silhouette on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid, flat silhouette of a castle with a tall central spire, smaller towers and a curved outline sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The design is rendered in a single brownish tone with simple filled shapes and no shading. It is centred on the lower arm against a red satin background.

The stencil had split along the spire again, so Mira cut a new one from a sheet of salvaged hull plate while the tide crept up the jetty steps. Every ferry that left Harrow Dock carried the same shape on its stern, a flat dark keep with a needle at its heart, because her grandmother had once said a boat needed something that stood still to steer by.

Nobody on the Sound remembered where the castle came from. The old charts marked the drowned hill only with a question mark, and the families who lived on its slopes called it the Keep, though no one had seen a keep in a century. What they had were the silhouettes: scratched into driftwood, daubed on crates, painted in the same rusty brown that the rain never quite washed off the pilot houses.
The storm caught the Tern off the reef on the ninth night. Lightning showed nothing but grey water on every side, until Mira's lamp swept the stern and the spire leapt out of the dark, sharp and certain, pointing north. She steered by it the way she had been taught, eyes fixed on the shape and not on the waves, and the Tern came round the reef with barely a scrape.
At dawn she tied up, took the fresh stencil from the locker and pressed it against the wet timber of the jetty post. The paint went on thick. When she lifted the card away, the castle stood there in the grey light, its spire turned towards the hill, and for once the tide did not come any higher.
