Black ink line drawing on paper of a castle skyline with the word hogwarts written in cursive script beneath it, shown as a tattoo design sketch.

Castle skyline with Hogwarts script design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn outline of a castle skyline with tall towers and spires sits above the word hogwarts in joined cursive script. The linework is single-weight black ink on white paper, with no shading and no colour. The design is centred and fills most of the frame, with a pen and a pencil visible at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ada, I have spent three evenings trying to draw the skyline of Carrow Tor from the lane above the mill, and every time the towers come out looking like a row of bad teeth. You always said I drew too much and looked too little. So I have put the pencil down and taken the ink pen instead, which Mr Penhale says forgives nothing, and I have decided to trust the line.

The castle sits on its rock like a hand held up to stop traffic. From the lane you can count nine spires, though the old men at the Fleece swear there were eleven before the storm of '09, and that the two missing ones went down the scree and are still lying there pointing the wrong way. I drew them as they are now. The top of the keep caught the last light, and I kept the pen moving so I would not lose it.

Underneath I wrote the name of the place the way Father wrote it in the gate ledger, joined up and careful, the letters leaning into one another like mourners at a wake. The schoolmaster's boy came by and asked whether it was a spell. I told him it was only a word that had been waiting a long time for somebody to write it down properly.

I am posting this with the drawing folded in, so mind the crease. Keep the paper if you like. When the weather turns, hold it up against the hill and see whether the towers still match. If they do, the joke is on the men at the Fleece. If they don't, I will blame the pencil. Your loving brother, Tom.
