Always script and Deathly Hallows symbol on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A triangle with a circle inside and a vertical line through it, the Deathly Hallows symbol, sits to the left of the word Always written in a flowing script. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink with no shading, and the design is shown in close focus against plain skin. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame, with the script extending to the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Harrowby had cut the same three marks into eleven boundary stones before the summer her brother stopped coming up the hill. The first was a triangle, the way her grandfather had taught her, sharp at the top like a church spire. Inside it went a circle, then a single upright line running through both, so the stone looked like a door that had been shut from the inside.

Her brother, Tom, had always said the marks were nonsense, a mason's showing-off, and she had always told him to hold the chisel still. Now she sat on the wall above the quarry with the mallet across her knees and the wind coming off the Solent, and she worked the last line herself. It was a word, not a symbol, because the stone was for him and he would not argue with a word.

The letters went in slowly, one curl at a time, the way the lettering on the harbour gates had gone in before the sea got at it. She had practised the loops on slate until her wrists ached. When she reached the end of the final stroke she sat back and looked at it for a long while, the way her father used to look at a sum that finally came out right.

Then the tide turned under the quay and she heard the bell buoy at the mouth of the harbour. She went down the hill with the chisel in her coat pocket, and she did not look back at the stone, because she knew exactly where it stood.
