Gothic cartoon kitty on a leg
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon cat character wears a purple and black hat, a bow, and a dark outfit with a fringed or spiked edge. It is drawn with a bold black outline and flat purple and grey fills, with simple dot eyes and a small mouth. The tattoo is centred on a close crop of skin, with a blurred background and a fishnet garment at the right edge.

Sit yourself down and mind the peat smoke. You'll want the one about Morag's cat, the one that went across to the mainland dressed for a funeral. Nobody on Scarra had seen a cat in a purple hat with two black ears poking through it before, and nobody has seen one since, so take my word or don't.

The cat was called Tibb, and she had a bow the size of a gull's wing tied on the left side, where the wind could argue with it all it liked. One grey morning she heard that Calum the ferryman's wife had died in Oban. Tibb climbed into the minister's wool bag, pulled on a black frock with its hem cut into points like the rocks at the north end, and tugged a hat knitted from an old purple jumper down over her ears. Mourning, she told herself, was owed to everybody, even to a woman she had never met.
On the crossing the gulls screamed at her and the spray came over the rail, but Tibb sat stiff as a candlestick with her paws folded and her two dot eyes fixed on the water. At Oban the whole island filed up the hill behind her. Nobody could stop her walking straight into the kirk and taking the front pew, and the minister was too astonished to try.
Then Calum's wife came down the aisle, very much alive, with a dentist from Oban holding her elbow. She had not died at all. She had simply left Calum for good and the island had been too polite to say so. Tibb looked at them both, then at the coffin that was not there, and walked back down the hill with her hat dripping. When you see a black cat in a purple hat on the quay, you give it the good seat, and you do not ask why it is dressed for mourning.
