The feather headdress arrived in a jumble bag marked 50p, along with a tin of mismatched buttons and a moth-eaten pantomime cloak, and Pearl Dobbin decided it belonged to the cat. Miss Bisket had sat in the window of the Seaside Tea Room for six summers, bow the size of a saucer, and nobody had ever dressed her for anything. Pearl pinned the feathers on with a hatpin and stepped back to admire the effect.

"You look ridiculous," said Gary from the fish stall next door, who had come in for a scone and stayed to argue about the tide. "Ridiculous and magnificent," Pearl said. The cat, who had never once agreed to anything, did not object. Customers laughed, a boy asked for a photograph, and by noon the orange fringe of her skirt was dusted with flour from a dropped bun.

At two o'clock the carnival committee arrived with a clipboard and a rulebook on fancy dress. Pearl argued, Gary argued louder, and the cat sat perfectly still on the cake stand while the feathers lifted in the breeze off the harbour. In the end the committee awarded her a rosette for Most Unexpected, which Pearl pinned neatly beside the bow.

That night, after the blinds came down, Pearl found the cat on the windowsill facing the water, one feather stirring though the door was shut. She left her there. Some things, she decided, were best left to the weather.
