Cat characters in Star Trek uniforms with stars
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows several cartoon cat characters in red, blue, green and brown uniforms, arranged in a cluster with outlined stars around them. The linework is bold and black, with flat colour fills and light grey shading on the skin. Both arms are shown side by side, with the design repeated in a mirrored layout on each.

The cats came down to the harbour the week the herring failed, four of them with their tails up like flagpoles and their red, blue, green and brown coats buttoned to the throat. Old Maren said they had walked out of the sea with the tide, but the fishermen said they had been up in the sky and fallen off a star, and that was why their paws stayed so clean.

The eldest, a tabby with a crooked ear, took the boat house by the pier and mended the nets with a needle no thicker than a hair. The brown-coated one carried water up from the well and never spilt a drop, though she would not say what she had been before the star. The small white cat in red wore a gold badge on her collar and gave orders to the gulls, who obeyed her because they could not think of a reason not to.
Every night they climbed the cliff above the harbour and counted the stars with outlined edges, the ones that did not twinkle, and marked each one with a chalk ring on the rock. Maren asked once what they were counting for. The green cat, who had the quietest voice, said they were counting the ones still owed to them, and that the sky kept its books well but slowly.
When the fleet came home a boat short in the autumn, the cats went out in the rowing gig without a word. They came back at dawn with the boat towed behind them and a lantern lit at the bow, and its light made a ring of seven small stars on the water. Maren still keeps the chalk rings in her kitchen window, and she says if you look at them long enough you can see which ones have been paid.
