Cartoon cat with two pistols and skull top

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon white cat with a large pink bow and a yellow nose stands front on, holding a grey pistol in each hand. It wears a dark top printed with a white skull and crossed-out eyes. The bold black outlines and flat fills give it a cartoon look, with light blue highlights on the ears and arms.

Sit closer, the fire won't hold for long, and you'll want to hear the bit about the cat before the owls start. You know the wood past Hollin Lane, where the oaks lean over the stile? That's where she came from, the white cat with the great pink bow tied on her head like a Sunday hat on a bishop's wife.

Nobody knew who had dressed her. Old Ada Pim swore the tinker left her in a hamper, and the tinker swore he'd sold her nothing but a clock. What we did know was that by the first frost she had taken to wearing a black jumper with a grinning white skull stitched across the front, and she walked the village wall with a grey pistol in each paw, one for the left and one for the right, as if she were the sheriff of the lanes.

The foxes laughed at her. The rooks laughed. Even Jack Dunning's ferret laughed, though he kept his head down while he did it. So the cat went off into the wood one night and came back with nothing but mud on her paws and a cross look, and she sat on the churchyard wall staring at the moon until it blinked first.

Here is the thing about those eyes, the skull's eyes I mean. Ada always said they were crossed out because the cat had decided not to look at the world the way the world looked at her. On the morning the fox came for the hens, the cat simply turned both pistols round, handed them to Jack's little girl, and asked for a saucer of milk. The fox went home. Those pistols, Ada says, are still in the girl's dresser, and they have never once gone off.
