Hello Kitty and skull sleeve tattoo
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A wide sleeve tattoo wraps around the arm, with Hello Kitty characters, teddy bears, cherries, red roses, a grenade, crossed bones and a heart-eyed skull set among stars and bubbles. The work uses bold dark outlines and smooth colour fills in red, pink, purple, yellow and white. The design runs across five panels of the limb, with the roses at each outer edge framing the central characters.

You find the crate on the slipway at low water, split open, its stencilled label gone to pulp. Packed in straw and sawdust are forty white china cats with red bows, a rattle of tin grenades that turn out to be lemon sweets, and a sack of cherry-red sea glass. Mr Okonedo from the chandlery says it fell off the Wexford boat in the squall and by rights belongs to the harbour master. You say nothing, because you have already pocketed the smallest cat, and it is warm from the sun on the stones.

By Thursday the whole quay has an opinion. Tegan the net-mender wants the bears sold to the summer families at a penny a head, and the lads from the fuel depot, who have crossed bones inked on their knuckles, want the lot melted down for the bell rope. You lie awake in the loft above the bakery, turning the cat over, counting the paint blisters on its bow until the rest of the town sounds like bread rising.
On Saturday the tide is high and the crate is gone. Someone has left a single teddy bear sitting on the bollard by the lighthouse steps, arms out, a cherry clutched in each paw. Nobody claims it. You walk down with the cat in your coat pocket and set it beside the bear, and for once the two of them look like they have been waiting for each other.
