Cat whiskers and heart nose on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of cat whiskers curves across the skin, with a small solid heart shaped nose at the centre. The heart is shaded with fine dots and greys, while the whiskers and mouth line are single, even strokes. The pale skin and plain background keep the focus on the tattoo, with a patterned sleeve visible at the right edge.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire only warms one side of the room. No, leave the cat alone, she has been listening longer than any of you. Now. In the days when the harbour at Kallion still had a wall with no gap in it, there lived a grey tabby called Oriel, who belonged to nobody and fed on everybody's mistakes.

She had whiskers finer than a weaver's thread, and she was vain of them. Every morning she sat on the quay and combed them out with one paw, and every morning the fishwives tutted and the gulls laughed. "Look at her," they said, "all moustache and no sense." Oriel took no notice. She had a knack for slipping between crates and knowing which net would hold and which would tear.

One winter a boy named Teo came down to the water with a broken oar and a face like wet bread. He had lost his father's boat in a squall and had nothing to offer the sea but his tears. Oriel did not groom that day. She padded over, pressed her small dark nose into his cold palm, and left a mark there, neat as a heart cut from slate. Teo laughed for the first time since the storm.

The boat came home on the spring tide, patched and sound, with Teo's father grinning at the tiller. Oriel was asleep on a coil of rope and did not stir, though her whiskers twitched once, as if she had known all along. And that, my friends, is why the old men of Kallion still say a cat's whiskers are the sea's way of feeling the weather coming.
