Panther and crescent moon on the hand
Traditional · Hand · Colour · Photo
A snarling black panther head with green eyes, bared teeth and long whiskers sits in front of a large yellow crescent moon. Bold black outlines and solid fills define the design, with a mottled yellow tone behind the moon. The tattoo fills the frame on the back of a hand, with some dark marks visible at the top edge.

By the third night the panther had moved from Mrs Pryce's coal bunker to the top of the pit wall at Cwm Glas, and nobody in the row would say who had let it out of the travelling show. My dad said it was a black cat with ideas. My mother said nothing, only set a saucer of milk on the step each evening and kept the back door bolted.

The yellow moon hung low over the headgear that week, fat as a cheese, and I lay awake counting the cage bells and waiting for the men to come up. The panther watched the shaft mouth the way the old deacon watched the choir, all teeth and disapproval, its whiskers stiff as fence wire. When the strike came in February the men stood about the wash-house in their caps arguing over bread money, and it was the cat that sat between them and the drift, unmoving.
On the fourth night the cage did not come up on time. Dad had been on the late shift, and the lamp at the top of the head went dark in a way my mother had learnt to fear. I took the saucer and walked to the wall. The panther's green eyes caught the light from the lamp room and held it. It stood, stretched, and walked down the slope ahead of me, stopping every few yards to look back, the way a good collie does.
We found the rescue party at the seventh level, the men coughing and grinning with their lamps still lit. Dad put his hand on my head, black to the wrist, and said the cat had gone straight at the rockfall as if someone had told it where to dig. Nobody believed him. I did. By morning the panther was back on the wall licking its paw in the thin sun, and the milk sat in the saucer, untouched.
