Small outlined hearts on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small heart outlines are tattooed on separate fingers, one on a finger in the foreground and one on a finger behind it. The linework is thin and single-weight in black ink, with no shading or fill. The photograph has a warm vignette and a blurred green grass background, with another hand holding the fingers.

Sit down, sit down, the eleven-forty is late again and it'll not come before I've finished. Dorothy Pask ran the ticket hatch at Hollin Cross for thirty-one years, and she used to say more promises were made on that platform than in any chapel in the county. This one began with a pair of hands on the bench by the signal box, one turning a pocket-watch chain and the other holding a paper bag of boiled sweets.

Her name was Ada, a seamstress who took the early train into Leeds every Tuesday to sell lace collars. His name was Tom, a lamp-man who trimmed the wicks along the branch line and had never been further than Skipton. They met because his lantern guttered out in the rain and she lent him a match. Nothing more than that for three Tuesdays running, until the match became a pencil and the pencil became a drawing on the back of a ticket stub.

Then came the question of what a man could give a woman who would not wear rings at the bench, because the pins snagged her lace. So Tom took a sewing needle and a bottle of soot from the lamp room, and on the Saturday before the wedding he pricked a small outlined heart onto the side of her finger. Then, because she said it was only fair, she did the same to his. The ink was thin as a hair and it hurt less than the whistle of the goods train.

The porter who came after Dorothy swore the hearts were still there the day the line closed, two little loops on two fingers, held side by side when they waved the last train through.
