Two cat heads on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The image shows two small cat heads tattooed side by side on pale skin, one ginger tabby above and to the left and one grey tabby with yellow eyes below and to the right. The linework is fine and soft, with whiskers, pink noses and shaded fur that give a painted, watercolour-like finish. Both cats face slightly towards the viewer against a plain, softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bridge at Vellenmoor had been built by a miller who wanted his daughters to cross it safely, and by the time Ada Crane was old enough to sell eggs at the far market, the stones were green with moss and the river ran fast under them in spring. Her two cats went everywhere with her. The ginger one, Marrow, sat on the cart and watched the road like a magistrate. The grey one, Tansy, walked on the wall and never once fell off it, though Ada had seen her try.

On the morning of the market the mist came up off the water so thick that Ada could not see her own boots. She stopped at the bridge's end and called out, the way her grandmother had taught her, asking the river to let her pass with what she carried. Nothing answered except the water. Then Marrow leapt from the cart, and Tansy dropped from the wall, and both of them walked out onto the stones ahead of her, tails high, as though they had business on the far side.

Ada followed them over, step by careful step, and when she reached the other bank the mist thinned enough to show her the road. Neither cat looked back. She set her basket down and counted her eggs, and every one was whole. The two of them curled together in the sunshine on the milestone, the ginger one with his nose tucked under the grey one's ear, and the river went on below as if it had never once tried to take anything from her.
