Cat face with four eyes on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line outline of a cat's head, facing forward and slightly tilted, with two ears and whiskers drawn in single black strokes. The cat has four eyes, two set on each side of the face, and the linework uses fine hatching on the ears and cheeks. The tattoo is in black ink on a close crop of the outer thigh, with a small dark tattoo visible lower down on the knee.

The innkeeper's cat at Hollin Ford had four eyes, two set low on her cheeks and two above, and the carters from the pass swore she could not be cheated at cards. Nobody had tried in years. The snow came down on the third day of Advent, and by the fifth the road had vanished beneath it, the milestones swallowed one by one until only the church spire showed above the drifts.

On the sixth night a knock came at the back door. The woman outside had frost in her eyebrows and a sack over one shoulder that kept shifting, as though something inside it were restless. Maud Ellery, who ran the kitchen, reached for the bar. Sorrel got there first, padding across the flags to sit on the stranger's boot and look up with the front pair of eyes, then slowly turn her head to study the sack with the other two.
'She knows what you're carrying,' Maud said. The stranger smiled without warmth and tipped a handful of coins onto the table. They were thin and grey and bore no faces, only a fine pattern of crossing lines, and Sorrel's ears went flat against her skull. Maud had seen that look once before, the winter the old miller's dog stopped barking at the mill wheel. She set a saucer of milk by the fire and said nothing at all.
Morning came with a hard blue light. The stranger was gone, and so was the sack, but the yard held only one line of prints leading away, and they were the prints of a cat. Sorrel sat on the step washing one ear, the way she always did, while the two high eyes closed last.
