Geometric cat face on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat's face is drawn in bold black outline, built from straight angular facets that divide the ears, eyes, nose and muzzle. The lines are solid black with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the skin with clean, even spacing. The image is in black and grey tones, with the tattoo filling most of the frame and a dark patterned sleeve visible at the left edge.

Margaret had drawn the cat in pencil three times before Mr Ashby let her ink it. The mill was down to four looms by then, and the pattern books were going out by the crate to a dealer from Calais who wanted the old geometric repeats and did not care what they were called. Margaret did not want the cat to be a repeat. She wanted it to be the only thing on the sheet with a face.

She worked at the high desk under the skylight with a straight edge and a set square, making every line meet its neighbour exactly. A cat built from flat facets, she thought, could be seen from any side and still be the same cat. The ears were two sharp shoulders of paper. The eyes were lozenges with the light caught in their corners. The nose was a single downward wedge she argued over for an entire afternoon, rubbing it out and drawing it back until the graphite shone.
On the last Friday, Mr Ashby came up the stairs slowly, holding the sheet by its edges as if it were a wet photograph. He studied it for a long time. Then he said the dealer would take the cat for the cover, and Margaret said that was not what she had drawn it for. He said he knew. He went back down without another word.
That evening she waited until the yard was empty and the gate was chained. She took the offcut from the bin, the thin strip of card where the muzzle had been trimmed, and folded it once along a clean ruled line. It fitted exactly in the inside pocket of her coat, against her ribs, and she walked home the long way past the dark sheds, counting the lines in her head.
