Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat with a pink bow sits on a teal cupcake case, with a small pink and orange detail beneath it. The shading is soft and smooth, with gentle gradients in the face and the cupcake wrapper. Bright colours dominate against the skin, and the design is framed by the ankle and toes in the photo.

Mrs Oyelaran had run the bakehouse on Skerry Quay for thirty-one years, and in all that time the cat had never once come in through the front door. He came through the coal hatch, or over the sill of the proving room, or once, memorably, down the flue. Nobody had ever seen him leave.

Then, the week before the regatta, a cupcake case went missing from the cooling rack. Teal, pleated, the sort she ordered by the thousand from a wholesaler in Aberdeen. She found it three days later under the bench, empty, with a single pink ribbon folded inside it like a note left for the postman.

She tied him a bow that evening from the leftover silk off the harbour master's wedding cake. It was far too big. He wore it anyway, perched in the window among the racks with the bearing of a cat who had been given a medal. By dawn the bow was gone, and so were two lemon sponges, and in the flour dusted across the step ran a line of tiny prints ending at a teal paper case, set neatly on the mat as if it were a thank you card.

Mrs Oyelaran swept the step, sighed, and put a fresh case on the rack for him, the way you would for a regular who could not be trusted with the door. Out on the quay the gulls were already quarrelling over the regatta bunting, and somewhere in the lane a small white shape was licking a sticky paw, very pleased with the morning.
