Hello Kitty and stars on a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of the Hello Kitty character, with a pink bow above her head, sits on the top of a foot beside two pink five-pointed stars. The character is drawn in thin dark outlines with pale fill and pink accents, and the design is clean and simple. The foot rests on a bright pink fluffy rug, with pink nail polish visible on the toes.

In the kingdom of Varrowind, where the bells rang in the wrong key, the royal cat had no mouth at all, and the court agreed this was the sign of a very important creature. She wore a pink bow the size of a thrush's nest, tied at the crown of her head, and whenever the stars came down over the eastern hills she would sit up and stare at them with her round black eyes. The court astronomer said they were falling. My mother said they were only lamps knocked from the sky by careless gulls. I thought the cat knew better, and I told her so, and she blinked slowly, which I took for agreement.
The turn came in the spring of the drought. The king ordered the bow cut loose so the cat could be dressed in the crimson of the Guard, and I was the one holding the scissors because nobody else would touch her. I hesitated. She leaned her head against my wrist, and I understood she had never needed a mouth. Every star that fell had been her answer, and the ribbon was the last of her voice.
I did not cut it. I tied it tighter, climbed the east tower before dawn, and found three stars lying in the wet grass like spilled sugar. I carried them down one at a time and set them on her cushion. In the morning the bells rang true, the cat slept with her bow still bright, and nobody asked me why the kitchen smelt of rain.
