You will not believe what the Harbour Street bake-off did to my Saturday. The judges arrived at ten with clipboards and the look of people who had already decided. I had spent three nights piping swirls of pink icing, eleven to a cake, because the leaflet said the judges liked symmetry. Mrs Okafor only laughed and told me to pipe the one that made me happy.

So I did the silly one. A lilac bow in the middle, a pearl pressed into its knot, and a teal sugar gem balanced on the very top as if someone had dropped it there and it had stuck. Green and yellow stars I cut from rolled fondant with the end of a straw. The cases I lined in blue striped paper, and round the bottom edge I threaded a string of sugar pearls. The last touch was a little white cat face I drew on a sheet of rice paper, copied from the sticker sheet Ruby brought back from Tokyo. I set it right at the front of the case, grinning at the judges.

The head judge, a man with half-moon glasses, picked up my cake first and turned it a full circle. He said nothing for so long that I forgot to breathe. Then he asked who had made the cat, and I said I had, and he said his daughter would be furious she hadn't seen it first.

We won the cup. It is a plastic thing with a chipped gold paint finish, and it sits on my windowsill beside the empty sticker sheet. Come on Sunday and I'll bake you one with the same bow. You can have the gem.
