Hello Kitty face with red bow on the foot

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small outline tattoo of the Hello Kitty face sits on the skin of a foot, with whiskers and a dot for the nose visible. The black linework is thin and even, and the bow above the head is filled in red. The photo is taken close up against a plain pale background, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The barrier at Kettle Col had been down for three days when the white cat came up the switchback road, trotting down the middle of the tarmac as if she owned the mountain. Her red bow was crisp and tied high at the top of her head, and she stopped in front of the hut, sat down, and waited.

Dafydd Rees came out with his ledger and pencil. "Papers," he said. The cat looked at him with her small black dot of a nose and produced nothing at all. "Then you're not crossing," he said, because that was the rule, and he had kept it for nineteen winters. She only blinked. In the blink he saw the bundle tied to her back with string: a dozen letters, each sealed in the same red wax, each addressed to the village of Lowe on the far side of the snow line, in a hand he knew from his mother's kitchen table.

He lifted the barrier. The rule had never said anything about letters. By the time the sun cleared the ridge he had carried eleven of them down the road himself, the cat trotting ahead with the twelfth held carefully in her teeth, and at every gate she stopped and waited for him to open it.

When he got back to the hut that evening there was one more letter on the step, sealed in red, addressed in his mother's careful capitals to DAFYDD, KETTLE COL. Inside was a single line: the road is open now, you may come home. He did not go. He pinned the seal to the inside of the ledger, where it still sits, a red bow above a face with no mouth.
