The snow had shut the pass by noon, and Hester Vane stopped counting the travellers stamping through her door. There were six of them by dusk: a wool merchant, two drovers, a priest who kept apologising for nothing, and a girl with a lute case strapped to her back. Hester fed them all from one pot of barley, and the cat watched from the rafters with the face of a creature who had been promised more.

His name was Meatball, though nobody remembered who had given it to him, and he was no lap cat. He had a ragged ear and a tongue like a rasp. On the second night he came down the beams and settled on the lute case, staring at the girl until she laughed and held out a crust. He ignored the crust. What he wanted was the stove-side, and the stove-side belonged to the merchant, who kicked the basket out of the way with his boot.
Meatball opened his mouth wide and shrieked, a sound like a gate dragged over stone. The drovers came up off their benches with their knives half drawn, the priest dropped his beads, and the merchant went white and backed into the wall. Hester said nothing. She only picked up the basket and set it back on the warm bricks.
In the morning the merchant left a silver penny in the cat's water bowl, and the girl sang one verse of a song nobody had heard before. When the road opened, the cat was still sitting on the stove-side, watching the door as though the next guest owed him something too.
