Cat in beanie and glasses on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tabby cat with yellow-eyed, bespectacled face wears a maroon knitted beanie and a collared shirt, with small yellow sparkles beside the hat. Bold black outlines define the fur, the glasses and the hat ribbing, with grey shading on the cat and a pink nose. The design fills the frame on a limb, set against a dark background.

Mrs Abbot had decided the ledger was wrong, and that the cat was responsible, because the cat had been sitting on it since Tuesday with his nose in the column as though he meant to read every figure aloud. Wickhaven was that sort of town. Nothing went missing without somebody's cousin knowing who had taken it, and nothing got blamed without a Sunday sermon on the matter. The newsagent's sat at the bottom of Fore Street, between the chemist and the wool shop, and its only real customers were the fishermen who came in for tobacco before the tide and the schoolchildren who came in for sherbet dabs after it.

Her nephew Danny had knitted the beanie for the cat at Christmas, maroon wool with a rib that never quite lay flat, and he had bought the spectacles from a jumble tray at the Methodist hall for threepence. Tom Yeo, who did the books for the co-op, said the animal looked like a clerk. Mrs Abbot did not argue. Clerks, in her experience, were the only men who ever counted anything right.

On Thursday the pools coupon came back from Manchester with eight draws and a pencilled tick beside each one. Mrs Abbot took it to the counter and turned it over twice. The cat blinked at her through the lenses, unbothered, and walked a paw across the column until it stopped on a figure she had written down wrong herself.

She did not tell Danny. She simply put the sherbet dabs at the cat's end of the counter from then on, and he seemed to think that fair.
