The sunglasses came from a man on the market who swore they once belonged to a bishop. They are orange, which Mr Pruitt says clashes with my coat, but Mr Pruitt has gone to Leeds for his sister's wedding and I have decided his opinion may be filed. The lenses are dark and faintly mirrored, and when the sun drops behind the gasworks chimney the glass fills with a city. It is teal and tidy, with towers standing straight and a sky the colour of a swimming pool.

The real skyline outside is shabbier: the crane above Tanner's yard, a pigeon with one foot, the bins. Each night I take the glasses off and the true view looks like a rumour. Yesterday a pigeon asked me where I was going dressed like that. I told it a cat in orange glasses does not need an invitation, and it did not argue, which I took as a compliment.

Please tell Mr Pruitt the marigolds are coming on. I have counted nine flowers in the pot, and three of them are mine. Yours in fur and dignity, Biscuit.
