Cat in top hat and monocle on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A ginger tabby cat wears a green top hat, a monocle on a chain and a green bow tie, and rests one paw in front of it. It sits inside an ornate black scrollwork oval frame with a teal background. The fur is shaded in orange and cream with fine whisker lines, and the bold black outlines give the piece a bold, classic finish.

Dear Win, you will not believe what Mr Pargeter has done to his studio this week. The cat, Lord Ambrose, a great orange tom with the temper of a cabinet minister, has been sitting for his portrait since Tuesday. Mr Pargeter says the animal will not be hurried and will not be painted in any pose but the one he has chosen, which is with one forepaw laid across the edge of the frame as if he owns the bank.

He insisted on the top hat himself. I watched him knock it off the hat-stand with his head three times before it sat right. Then came the monocle, which Mr Pargeter had to fasten to a length of chain salvaged from his late father's watch, and which Ambrose tolerated only because the bow tie was green, and he has opinions about green. The bow tie was tied by the housemaid, Clara, who came back from the task with a scratch down her wrist and a look of great satisfaction.
Yesterday the light failed at four and the cat would not move until the oval background was right. Mr Pargeter painted teal, the colour of the sea off Clevedon, because Ambrose sat on the blue cloth and refused the grey. Then the scrollwork frame went on in black, and I swear the animal looked at it and nodded.
Last night Mr Pargeter sent me to fetch the cat for his supper, and I found Ambrose on the windowsill with the hat tipped forward, staring down at the street as if he had been commissioned to watch it. The portrait is finished. Mr Pargeter has sent the bill to Ambrose's account, care of the milk woman, and I think it is the first honest invoice he has ever written. Your loving brother, Edwin.
