Cat on a stool on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat stands on a three-legged stool with its head lowered towards a small bone on the skin below. The subject is drawn in delicate, sketchy fine linework with light stippled shading on the cat's body and the stool. The design is black ink only and sits in the centre of a pale forearm, with a coin placed above it for scale against a blurred cobbled street.

Halloran swore the cat was half the business. Every morning before the shutters went up, Biscuit hopped onto the three-legged stool by the back door, the one with the wobble nobody had ever fixed, and stared at the tiles until something turned up. Usually it was a heel of crust. Once it was a coin that Halloran had given up for lost, which the cat had clearly been saving for a rainy day.
That Thursday it was a bone, a small pale splinter that had come in with the lamb delivery and rolled under the rack. Biscuit sat with his head bowed over it like a mourner at a graveside, and the stool creaked under him as if it felt the weight of the thing too.
I picked the bone up to throw it out. He looked at me the way the stool must have looked at him, patient and unimpressed, so I set it down exactly where it had been. Some mornings you do not clear a thing away. You let the light come up slowly over the flour and wait for the cat to decide.
