Small shell outline on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a spiral shell, possibly a whelk or conch, sits on pale skin. The linework is thin and even, with the surface of the shell filled in by light dotted stippling. The single dark ink stands out against the knitted patterned fabric in the background, and a white object appears at the right edge of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The Marigold Rose put in at Whitby on Tuesday and I have been meaning to write since, but the galley has been a madhouse with the new cook laid up in his bunk with a fever and me stirring two pots of mutton at once. Cook Halloran says I have hands made for it. I say they are only hands that do not want to be shouted at.
Something happened on the quay that I want to tell you. A boy of perhaps nine was selling whelks out of a bucket, grey things the size of a fist, and when I bought three for a penny he gave me a fourth for nothing because I had a face like his older brother, he said. I turned it over in my palm all the way back to the galley. The spiral goes round and round and then stops at a point as sharp as a darning needle, and I thought, that is how a sailor counts a voyage, going round the same stretches of water until the sum comes out at the middle.
I boiled the whelks in seawater with a bay leaf and picked them out with a pin, and the galley that night smelt of iron and salt with something sweet underneath. The shell I kept. I scrubbed it with a bristle brush and set it on the sill above the stove where the steam could get at it, and by morning the spotted bloom on its lip had lifted like frost off a pond. I have a mind to have it drawn on me before we sail, a small thing, outline only, so that I carry a bit of Whitby quay about with me and no one can take the fourth whelk off me.
Mind you do not tell Mother. She thinks I am still keeping a respectable ledger.
Your loving sister, Hannah
