Sleeping cat outline on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo shows a cat curled up asleep with closed eyes, its tail forming a spiral that wraps around the body. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against pale skin on the inner wrist. The hand is raised toward the top of the frame, with a plain light surface behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came to Wexcombe the week the river flooded the lower meadow, and with it came Mags Tully's grey cat, who would not be fed from a bowl and would not be shut in a wagon. She slept where she pleased. On the second night she slept on the hot brass rail of the carousel, curled so tight that the tail went round her like a rope on a capstan, and when the lad who minded the horses tried to lift her she opened one eye, looked at him as if he were a bill come due, and shut it again.

Nobody could say whose cat she was. Mags said she belonged to the weather. The lad, whose name was Owen Pask and who had come to the fair to get away from a father who kept pigs, said she was the only creature in Wexcombe who ever slept without fear, and he used to sit with her on the step of the ticket booth in the grey hour before the lamps were lit, waiting for her to wake so he could be told what to do.

On the last night the flood came up the lane, and the wagons had to be roped to the church wall. Owen went looking for the cat and found her asleep in the dry belly of an upturned tub, so deep in her dreams that her tail had gone round and round her like the spring of a clock. He sat beside her in the water until it reached his knees and no further. By morning the river had gone back where it came from, and the cat was gone, though the tub still held a warm dent in the shape of her and a single grey hair, which Owen kept in his shirt for the rest of his life.
