Cat outline with watercolour wash on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single-line outline of a cat sitting side on, with its tail curling down to the bottom right. The black linework is fine and unbroken, and the body is filled with a loose pink and blue wash that bleeds past the outline in places. The tattoo is small and centred on the inner wrist, with a blurred stone step and bystander feet in the background.

Dear Morag,

The cat came off the Thursday ferry in a fish crate, and nobody on the pier would claim him. Calum at the shop says he belonged to the Lewis crowd who left in March, but Calum says a great many things before his second pint. I've called him Tuesday, since that is what he is, a day nobody wants to be on.
He sits on the wall above the slipway every evening and watches the boats come in with the tide. His outline is the thinnest thing you ever saw, one black line drawn round him without lifting the pen, his tail hooked down at the end like a question mark someone forgot to finish. The sunset gets into him, though. Pink along the back, a blue that turns grey where the sea mist comes off the bay, and it spills over his edges the way Father's wash used to when he painted the boat in '79 and never bothered to stay inside the lines.
I went down last night with a tin of pilchards and the wind pushing at my coat. He let me come close, which he has never done, and then he looked past me at the water as if somebody out there owed him money. I left the tin on the wall and walked home without looking back, which I think is what he would have wanted.
Write when the post goes out. Tell me whether Mam ever got her good scissors back from Ishbel.
Love, Eilidh
