Cat portrait with script name on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic portrait of a tabby cat with white markings around the muzzle, shown head-on and slightly tilted, with long whiskers drawn in fine white lines. Soft shading builds the fur texture and the eyes, and a bold, looping script reading Woody sits beneath the portrait. The photograph is taken close up on a forearm against a dark background, with the design filling most of the frame.

Woody had been Gran's cat for fourteen years and had attended exactly one wedding before this one, a christening in 2009 from which he had come home with a pork pie. Nobody else was crawling about on the parquet. Her brother Frank was filming the speeches on his phone, and the bride's mother was explaining to the vicar that the cat was family, which was true and no help at all.
Dot got down on her stomach. The cat backed into the crepe paper garland, the ring still clamped between his teeth like a stolen cigarette. She held out a cocktail sausage and made the small kissing noise Gran had always used, and for a moment his ears went flat and then forward, and he considered her offer with great seriousness.
He let the ring drop onto the parquet, neatly, as if he had done her a favour, and then he walked past her, climbed onto the velvet cushion the bride had left on the chair, turned three times and sat down on it. Dot lifted the ring from the floor. It was warm from his mouth, and she slid it into her pocket and went to tell the vicar the good news.
