The miller's daughter kept a cat called Sorrel who would not be carried. Every morning she walked the long road to the weir with the grain sacks, and every morning the cat walked ahead of her, tail up like a question mark, never once looking back to see if she followed. The village said the cat was proud. The miller said it was lazy. Only the old ferryman, who had crossed the river for sixty years, said nothing at all, but he would nod when the cat passed and tip his cap to it.

One autumn the river rose in the night and took the footbridge. The girl stood on the bank with a sack on her shoulder and wept, because the mill would not run without flour and the flour would not go across without a boat. The cat sat down beside her, washed one paw, and then walked straight to the water's edge and waited, its face turned toward the far bank as if it had seen something there that the girl had not.

The ferryman came at dusk, poling his flat boat through the reeds. He lifted the cat aboard first, then the sacks, then the girl. On the far side the cat stepped onto the mud and looked back once, green-eyed and unbothered, and the girl understood at last that she had been led, not followed, all those mornings. She laughed until she had to sit down on the sack, and the ferryman, who had never once been thanked by a cat, went home and told his wife it was the best day he had had in years.
