Cat with flowers and heart on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A simple cat with closed eyes and a small nose sits at the centre, with black line flowers and red berries rising from its head like a vase. A solid red heart sits below its face, and dotted shading along its sides adds texture. The design uses black linework with red accents and is set on the back of the upper arm against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The plums had started to split in the long grass by the third week of August, and Nell Carrow knew the cat would be asleep on the orchard wall before she reached the gate. Mabel was grey, neat and entirely unbothered by the wasps. She sat with her paws folded under her chest and her eyes shut tight, as if the whole valley had been arranged for her benefit.

Nell had her own reasons for climbing up that morning. Her father had planted the old orchard, and since his funeral the ladders had leaned against the trees with nobody to climb them. She carried a basket, a flask of tea and the envelope from the solicitor, which she had not yet opened. Mabel did not look up. Somewhere behind the hedge a tractor coughed and went quiet.

When Nell finally sat beside the cat on the warm stones, she noticed that bramble flowers had come up through a crack in the mortar, white and small, with a few red hips strung along the stems like beads. She had walked past them all summer. Mabel had not. The cat's head was tilted towards them, as though she had been keeping them company.

Nell opened the envelope on her knee. It was only a list of things to sign, and a note asking whether the orchard should be sold. She folded it small, tucked it in her pocket and picked a plum from the nearest branch. It was split and sweet. She set the stone on the wall for Mabel, who opened one eye, considered it, and closed it again.
