Cat with jewel brooch and Mila script
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised cat's face with a large jewelled brooch on its forehead, a pearl-and-dot necklace beneath, and the name Mila in script above. Bold black outlines define the features, with soft shading on the fur, pink accents on the ears and brooch, and a teal wash behind the head. The composition is shown in six close-up and wider photographs of the same arm.

Mila came aboard at Grimsby in a biscuit tin with holes punched in the lid, and she was already wearing the brooch. Nobody on the Silver Gannet could say where it came from. Skipper Hollis reckoned the ticket clerk had dressed her for a joke, and the lads took to calling her the Duchess, but Mila never answered to it. She sat on the winch housing in the spray with her pearls knotted round her neck like a dowager at a christening, and she watched the water the way the rest of us watched the weather.

The Dogger turned on us in the third week of November. We ran before it for two days with the hatch boards lashed and the galley fire out, and every man who could stand was sick over the rail except the cook, who sat on a crate and sang hymns he didn't believe. Mila stayed put. When the bow went under and came up again, she was still on the winch, her red stone catching the lamp each time the boat rolled, steady as a lighthouse. I started to think she was keeping count of us.
On the morning the wind dropped, she came down the ladder to my bunk and sat on my chest until I woke. She had one of Hollis's gloves in her mouth, the one he'd lost over the side the first night, and I had no idea where she'd found it. She dropped it at my feet and walked off towards the wheelhouse as if she'd settled a debt.
We landed on the Friday. Hollis went up the quay with his cheque and his bad temper. Mila went up after him, and she sat by the fish market for the rest of the day, facing the mouth of the harbour, watching the boats come in one at a time.
