Sphynx cat and butterfly on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a large hairless sphynx cat with big teal eyes, sitting with one paw raised, beside an orange monarch butterfly and green leaves. Bold black outlines frame soft shading on the cat's skin, and orange and yellow circles sit behind the design as a backdrop. The image is a close crop of the thigh, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ship's cat came aboard at Lisbon in a sack, and the bosun said nothing with that much fur on it would last a week at sea. It had no fur at all. Its skin was pale as dough and creased at the knees, and its eyes were the green-blue of shallow water over sand, so wide that the first mate swore it had been watching him before he saw it.

Somewhere past the Canaries the wind died and the ship lay on flat water for nine days. The men cursed the heat and the stillness. On the tenth morning a monarch butterfly came drifting across the deck, orange as a lamp, blown out from some island nobody had charted. It settled on the rail, and the cat, which had never once chased anything, lifted one paw and held it there, very still, as if asking the whole ship to wait.

The sailors waited. The sun came up low and swollen behind them and laid a round orange light across the water. Nobody spoke. The butterfly opened and closed its wings twice, then lifted and drifted toward the mainmast, and the cat let its paw fall with a small contented sigh, the way an old man sets down a heavy bucket.

The wind came back before noon, and the bosun swore the cat had called it. Nobody argued. For the rest of the voyage they kept the rail clear and laid a sprig of mint by the galley door each dawn, in case the bright thing returned. It never did, but the cat kept its paw lifted toward the east every morning until the coast of home came up grey over the bow.
