The florist had sent peonies the colour of cold tea, and Dad was on his knees behind the village hall, sorting them into buckets, when the cat came round the bins as if she had been booked for the afternoon too. Grey all over, pale-eyed, ears like they had been cut from card. I told him she was not ours. He told me nothing in Ferris Cross belonged to anybody, least of all a cat.

The cat sat on the top step through the ceremony and walked the length of the trestle tables during the wedding breakfast, picking between the glasses like a waiter who knew the bill. When Tom's brother stood up to speak, with a card full of jokes about the ferry and the sheep, she settled herself on the tablecloth in front of him and looked at him steadily until he lost his place and had to read the ferry joke twice.

When the photographer asked for the family on the church steps, the cat came too, and nobody had the heart to shoo her. In the photo the peonies are soft at the edges, the veil is a grey cloud, and the cat sits dead centre with her eyes open, as if she had been posed. Nell has it framed in the hallway. Visitors always ask whose cat she is, and Nell tells them the truth: she came with the flowers.
