Fingerprint heart tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A heart shape is filled with fine black lines that form fingerprint-like whorls and ridges. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the design reads as solid black ink on skin. The heart fills most of the frame against a plain background of skin.

Dear Teo, the card came back from the lab this morning with a ring of coffee on one corner, and I laughed out loud in the records room because the ridges had come out looking like someone had tried to draw a heart on it. Laid over each other on the light table, the whorls made a heart.

Nobody asked for that. The file came to me for a tidy-up: duplicate records, a clerk's error, merge them and close the drawer. Instead I sat with the magnifier until my eyes stung, following the lines with a pencil tip, and found she had rolled her thumb in the same slow curl he always used, as if the two of them had learned to sign their names in one hand.
I did not merge them. I wrote in the margin that both prints were correct and should stay apart, filed them side by side in the cabinet by the window, and told Mrs Ashdown it was a matter of record. She let it go. I think she saw what I saw, though she would never say so in an office.
Come on Sunday. I'll show you the card and you can tell me I'm being soft. Bring the good tea and the ink pad from the shop in Folkestone, because I want to roll my own thumb for the first time in years, just to see whether mine would ever lie down that neatly next to someone else's.
