A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The inspector came up the valley road on the first Tuesday of the month, carrying a brass stamp wrapped in flannel and a tin of ink that smelled of cloves. He had a ring for a mouth and two letters inside it, and the people of Dunmere had never seen a thing so exact. He said the stamp would only take on what was clean, and that it would know.

Hal Brindle's mill had ground oats on the same stones as the wheat since his father's time, and the hopper still held a grey dust nobody could sweep out. The stamp pressed onto a sack of flour and came away blank, as if the cloth had turned to water. Hal's daughter Nell said nothing. She carried buckets of cold river water up the mill steps for nine nights, scrubbed the stones with salt until her knuckles bled, and slept in the loft with the cat for warmth.

On the tenth morning the inspector lifted the stamp, pressed it down, and the ring came up black and sharp, the letters standing square in the middle. He looked at the flour, then at Nell, then at the hopper, which was bare to the wood. He asked her how she had done it. She told him she had taken the oats out by hand, one handful at a time, and that it had taken as long as a winter.

The stamp hangs now in the chapel by the door. Each spring the children of Dunmere press its ring onto the backs of their hands, and the mark stays for a day, pale and certain, to show who was patient enough to finish a thing properly.
