Concentric circles with lines on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of three concentric circles with horizontal lines extending to each side, drawn in thin, even outlines. It sits on the forearm of a person in a black hoodie with the sleeve pushed up, photographed against a pale wall and paving. The design is solid black linework with no shading or colour, centred on the arm.

The lamp on Skerrow had been dark for eleven days when Ingrid Lund came down the jetty with a biscuit tin under her arm and asked me to take her across the strait before the tide turned. I told her the post on the far side would not open until morning. She said her brother would not be waiting for the post.

I rowed her out in the grey dinghy, the tin balanced between her knees, the mainland a smear of yellow windows. The strait is barely four hundred metres at its narrowest, but the officers over there like their paperwork and the coastguard likes its sleep, so the crossing is made in the dark by people who would rather not be asked where they have been. Halfway over she lifted the lid. It held no ashes, only a bundle of letters tied with string, every envelope postmarked from the same town on the far shore.

'He used to flash the lamp at me,' she said. 'Three rings, then the long bars, the way the old keepers did when the fog came in. I always answered him.' I had not known that. The lens had been my uncle's, and when I reached back toward the light I could still feel the brass rings turning on their track.

We reached the stones as the beam swept round behind us. She stepped out with the tin and the letters, and I stayed in the boat until the bars of light came round again and laid themselves across the water. I answered with my torch, three short flashes, the way he would have wanted. Somewhere up the beach a single window went on.
