Chain links and rope band on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three interlocking chain links shaded in grey tones with highlights, framed by two bands of black braided rope that wrap around the limb. The lower panel shows a close view of the same rope band with a knot, drawn in dense solid black with fine highlights. The composition is tightly cropped on the skin, with the two views stacked vertically.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock gate at Hollin had sprung a link in the February frost, and by dawn the water was dropping faster than anyone liked. Dora Penhale was the only hand on the towpath who could splice a broken chain with rope before the Mary Ellen ran aground on the sill. She worked with her back to the wind, laying three strands over and under, pulling each tuck tight until the braid began to sing against the iron.

Her father had taught her that a knot was only as honest as the hand that tied it. He had bought the old links from a scrapyard in Wigan forty years back, joined three of them into a loop, and hung them on the gatepost as a joke. Iron for the gate, he said, and hemp for the men who keep it. Nobody on the cut understood the joke, least of all Dora, who thought it foolish until the spring he died and she found rope wrapped round that chain in his own careful hand.

She wound the rope round the chain twice more, then once through the middle link, so that neither could slip without the other. When the gates groaned open and the Mary Ellen slid through on a tide of brown water, the boatman raised his cap and shouted something she couldn't hear over the paddles. She stood on the lock side with the frayed end in her fist and the cold seeping through her gloves.

Later, when the lock was quiet and the links were drying on the post, she traced the knot with her thumb. It was tight, and it would hold, and it would need cutting to come undone.
