Charm anklet tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and lower leg stand on wet sand, with a black ink tattoo around the ankle that imitates a braided cord with charms hanging from it. The charms include two feathers, a small hamsa hand, a flower of life circle, a smaller mandala-like wheel and an ankh. The linework is thin and even, with light shading in the feathers and the circular motifs, and the wet background is muted and neutral.

The cord had gone slack again by the third bell of the forenoon, and Ruth Abbey sat cross-legged on the spare sail with the charms spread over her knees like dropped beads. Forty-one pieces left from Falmouth. She counted them twice, the way her father counted lamp oil, then gave up and counted the feathers instead. Two grey, one white. The white one had come off a gull that followed the *Harriet Vane* past Ushant and died on the taffrail somewhere in the Bay.

Tobiah Penhallow came aft with his hands black from tar and asked for a hamsa, the little open hand with the eye in its palm. His mother had a cough that wouldn't lift, he said, and the chandler in Falmouth had told him a charm from the sea was worth two from the land. Ruth told him the mate, Greaves, had forbidden trinkets on a working ship. Tobiah said Greaves had forbidden most things, including singing, and that he would pay in tobacco. She took the tobacco.
The squall came off Finisterre before the watch changed. The cord parted with a crack like a shot, and charms went skittering across the wet planks into the scuppers. Ruth went down on her knees after them, and Tobiah came too without being asked, feeling under the pump with his fingers while the deck rose and fell beneath them. He found the ankh wedged against a ringbolt, its loop bent but whole. He held it up to the grey light and said, 'This one's the only one that looks like it knows where it's going.'
They restrung the lot in the lee of the galley, with a sailor's bend at every join because Ruth would not trust anything less. She left the hamsa for his mother and kept the ankh for herself, tying it last at the end of the cord so it would swing when the ship did.
