Cherry blossom branch with script quote

Lettering · Mixed · Flash

A drawn design shows a cherry blossom branch in dark brown with pink blossoms, curving up from the lower left. Black cursive script above it reads "The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all". The linework is fine with a soft pink wash on the petals, set against a pale background.

Her son Tobias brought in a cut branch from the orchard behind the church, bare and grey as a coat hanger, and set it in a jug on the windowsill because he could not bear to see her so tired. She told him it was foolishness. She said a dead thing stays dead in January, and he should throw it on the midden before it dripped on the counter.

Still she rose at four each morning, kneaded the rye with the honey she had hoarded, and shaped loaves no bigger than fists so they would cook through quickly. The old folk came for them in the dark, shuffling, saying nothing, holding out their coins in cold palms.

On the twelfth morning Tobias came down before the oven was lit and stopped on the stairs. Pink buds had split along every twig of the branch, and among them, open and pale as sugar paper, a few flowers had come out into the cold kitchen. Nobody in Harrow had seen blossom in that month in living memory. His mother stood with floury hands and looked at it a long while. Then she took down the largest tin, pressed the petals into the crust of the rye, and sold every loaf before the church bell rang eight.
