Cherry blossoms and script monogram on back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

Several pink cherry blossom flowers with yellow centres and green leaves surround a large black script monogram on bare skin across the upper back. The blossoms are outlined in black with soft pink shading and a few loose petals scattered around the design. The monogram uses flowing, shaded black linework, and the composition spreads the flowers in a loose arc around the lettering.

Dear Ruth, The blossom came early this year, the way it does when the frost has nothing to say about it. I went down this morning with the wheelbarrow meaning to clear the stones from the ditch, and instead I stood there like a fool with the handles in my fists.

You'll remember Father bought the three saplings off a travelling nurseryman in 1931, the one with the wax moustache who swore they came from a temple garden and cost him a week's wages. Mother said he'd been robbed. Father said robbed was a thing that happened to people who didn't look after what they paid for. Well, they lived. Two of them did. The one by the gate went over in the gale last March, and I never told you because you had your hands full with the baby.

I've kept the little box you sent me, the one with the carved lid, and I've been thinking I should put a cutting from the surviving tree inside it and post it up to Leeds. Don't laugh. Enclosed is a single petal, pressed flat between two pages of the almanac, so you know I'm not making it up. Keep it somewhere the damp can't reach.

Come at Easter if the trains run. The orchard is yours as much as mine, and the petals won't wait.

Love, Edie
