Grinning cat tearing through skin on ribs
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A grinning grey cat with bright green eyes and yellow-tinged teeth appears to burst through torn, dark skin. The shading is smooth and realistic, with highlights on the eyes and fur, and the ragged black tears radiate outward across the flank. Colour is limited to the green eyes, the warm teeth and a touch of pink on the nose, with the rest in black and grey.

The roof of Ashgill Drift had been talking for a fortnight before anyone saw the cat. Old Tom Garside swore it was a cough in the stone, then a snore, and on the Monday shift the men heard a low chuckle come out of the face at the forty-yard mark. Hannah Tully, who kept the lamp room and did the wages sums on the back of the bread bills, went down with the overman to see for herself.

They found the seam split like wet cloth. Through the tear came grey fur, two green eyes lit from somewhere behind them, and a grin wide enough to show teeth the colour of old piano keys. The overman, Ralph Dunning, put his palm to the rock and said it was only a fault line. Nobody laughed. The cat's mouth moved with the pull of the air, and the black stone around it curled back like the edges of a burnt letter.
Ralph wanted the face boarded over with pit props. Hannah, who had buried a brother under the same hill, asked what might happen if it was left alone. Ralph had no answer, so the men went home, and the drift stayed shut for a month while the grin watched from the gap whenever a lamp was carried past.
In the spring the price of coal fell and the company sent word that Ashgill would close. On the last morning Hannah climbed the bank and found the tear had widened in the night. The cat was gone, but the grin hung in the torn black rock like a door left on the latch, and she found herself smiling back at it, because the hill had taken everything else she had.
