The man at Harwich would not stop smiling at me, and I have decided it was the cat. He had the grin, you see, the one that hangs in the air after the rest of the animal has gone. He came off the night ferry with a hatbox under one arm and a travel case that rattled like a box of teeth. When I asked him to open it, he said he had nothing to declare except a sense of direction he had mislaid somewhere near Calais.
I should have sent him back to the queue. Instead I looked at his papers, which were in order, and at his face, which was not, and I asked him what he was carrying. He said, very politely, that it was a garden. Then he lifted the lid and there were no flowers at all, only a row of small painted tin mushrooms and a card, reading in careful capitals: WE ARE ALL MAD HERE.
I laughed, which the regulations do not allow, and stamped his form with the wrong stamp. He thanked me as though I had given him a kingdom.
Marjorie, I have been turning it over all evening. Some days the whole border feels like that, a line painted on a road that nobody quite believes in. I wonder now whether the grin was meant for me.
