Cat semicolon on the forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black semicolon sits on the lower forearm, with its dot shaped like a cat's head with pointed ears. Above it, a black and grey tattoo of a woman's face has curling hair and small lettering reading 'hair' and part of another word. The photograph is taken straight on in an indoor setting with even light, and the skin tone is pale.

For the last week of the season the big top had more holes than canvas, and Tobias Gale spent his mornings with a paste pot and a box of letters, pasting bills to the barn walls of villages that had stopped expecting him. The posters still said FORTY ACTS. There were nine acts. Mrs Pim's performing cat, Semicolon, rode on the wagon roof with her tail curled over the edge, and she sat on every proof he laid out, which was how he came to notice that she always chose the spot between two words.

The show was meant to end on Saturday in Hexby, but the ringmaster, a man who had never once stopped talking, said they would pause instead. Pause, he said, not stop. Tobias thought about this while he worked. A full stop was a funeral, and a comma was a man catching his breath on the stairs. A semicolon was the trick of holding a sentence open so the second half could arrive on time.

On Friday night the lamps guttered and the crowd of forty stayed for the cat alone. Semicolon walked the rope between the two poles, paused at the middle where the wire sagged, and did not fall. Afterwards Tobias pasted his last bill to the gatepost, a new one, blank except for a single mark he had painted in black: a stroke, a dot, and the dot with two small ears. Under it he wrote nothing at all. The next town could decide how the sentence ended.
