On the island of Gorrow the fishermen said the tide came in grinning. Old Ada Mernock kept a boat called the Patience and a tailless grey cat that went wherever it pleased. One March the cat stopped sitting on the harbour wall, and the gulls, who had quarrelled with it for years, went quiet as if they had lost their argument.

Nobody could find it. Her grandson Tam searched the lobster pots, the chapel loft and the salt shed. On the third night, rowing back through fog, he saw a grin hanging above the lee of the rocks, all teeth and no body, with two blue eyes drifting over the water like lamps. He asked where his granny's cat had got to. The grin said that was the wrong question. The right one was whether anyone on Gorrow was foolish enough to row out after it.

Tam rowed out anyway, shouting that everyone on the island was mad, which was true of the minister, the tax man and his own father. The grin laughed until the sea lay flat. Then it said, "We're all mad here, boy, and that's how the island holds together," and it let the cat drop onto the thwart, purring, with a sprat in its mouth.

The next morning the grin was painted on the chapel door, though nobody on Gorrow had painted it. Ada laughed until she had to sit down on the step, and the cat climbed onto her knee. The grin is still there. When a Gorrow man is in doubt about a decision, he touches the wood where the teeth are and feels which way the wind is blowing.
