A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pellow's hat shop on Cutler Lane had been closing down since Easter, and by the last Saturday in August the window held nothing but four blocked felts and a cardboard sign reading Everything Must Go. He had painted the percent sign himself, in green ink, because he believed customers trusted a number more than a word. Half off, he said. Then a third off. Then, when the bell over the door stopped ringing altogether, the tag on the tallest hat simply said Ask.

The cat came with the lease. Nobody knew whose it was. It sat on the cold radiator in the back room and watched the stock go, grey as a dishcloth, and its grin seemed to widen each time someone tried on a hat. Dolores from the bakery tried on a bowler and laughed until she had to sit down. A boy from the fishmonger's tried a stovepipe and asked what it cost. "Whatever you're mad enough to pay," Pellow said, and the cat's eyes went a clear, startled teal.

On the final afternoon I found the ledger. Every sale was written in the same cramped hand, and every price had been crossed out and written lower, until the figures were nearly nothing. Beside each entry he had noted a pin: a brass one, a glass one, a silver bee. I asked him what the pins were for. He said they were for the people who came back to say the hats fitted better than they had any right to.

The shop was empty when I locked up. The cat had gone from the radiator, and on the counter sat the tallest hat, its tag now bearing a single small percent sign, with a pin pushed through the band and a note tucked under it in green ink: Sold to you, mad as you are.
