Cheshire Cat tattoo on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the grinning Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, with its striped pink and purple body curled around the design and a long striped tail sweeping above it. The outlines are bold and the stripes and face are filled with solid colour, with soft teal and green splashes behind the figure. The composition is centred on the skin of an upper leg, with the cat filling most of the frame.

The cat turned up on the Grimsby quay the week the Ellen Rose lost her steering, and nobody could say whose it was. It was striped like a bolster cushion, pink and purple under the sodium lamps, and it sat on the bollard by the fish market as if it had been paid to wait for us. Skipper Dunnet swore it was a ghost. Mags at the ice house swore it was a stray with a bad owner. I swore nothing, because I was twenty and had been up for thirty hours.

What unsettled the crew was the grin. It hung there after the rest of the cat had gone. We'd be hauling the trawl, the net coming up heavy with haddock, and there it was above the winch, a mouth stretched across the dark like a split in a sail. Dunnet started talking to it. He asked where the fish were. The grin said nothing, which Dunnet took as a sign, and we steamed north on a hunch that made no sense on any chart.
On the third night the fog came down thick as wet wool. The tail came first, a long striped thing sweeping across the wheelhouse glass, then the body, and last of all the grin, which hung in the murk a moment longer than any cat should. Then it was gone. The Ellen Rose found the ground we'd been missing, a bank of cod so thick the hull shuddered with them, and we hauled for a day and a night without a single man asking where we were.
When we came home Dunnet painted a stripe on the bollard, and I swear the cat was back on it the next morning, licking a paw as if it had never left. Nobody questions it now. We leave it the dry end of the quay and call it the pilot.
