Lumpy Space Princess with crystals and stars on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A purple cartoon cloud character with a yellow star on its head sits at the centre of the design, with a sleepy expression and one arm drawn across its body. Surrounding it are faceted crystals, holographic-looking stars, and hearts reading STAY TRUE and 2U, all outlined in black. Soft pastel colours of lilac, teal, pink and yellow are shaded smoothly against the skin, with the design filling an oval composition.

The candy hearts ran out first, which is how Tomasz knew the fair was finished. Forty years of pastel sweets in paper bags, stamped STAY TRUE and 2U, and by October there was nothing left in the caravan but a tin of sugar and the cloud.

The cloud was his grandmother's work. She had cut it from lilac canvas, stuffed it with wool, and pinned a yellow star to its forehead so the children could tell which way it faced. It was sulky by nature. It sat on the ring with one arm folded across its middle and its eyes half shut, and no matter how hard the calliope played it would not get up. Glass crystals from a dead chandelier ringed it, and foil stars turned slowly on wires above the stalls.

On the last night the crowd was six people and a dog. Tomasz wound the crane, and the cloud, which had never once in his life lifted, came up off the grass as if someone had asked it politely. It rose past the lamps and the stalls and the broken big wheel, and the dog barked at it until it was only a lilac smudge against the dark over the hills. The six people stood with their heads tipped back. Nobody paid to see that.

Tomasz kept one heart. It was green, a little chipped, and the letters were still there in the sugar, 2U, worn soft at the edges. He put it in his coat pocket and walked home along the road the cloud had taken.
