Cheshire Cat with spiral tail on a leg
Other · Colour · Photo
A pink and purple Cheshire Cat sits in a crouched pose, grinning broadly with yellow eyes and stripes on its body. Its long tail forms a series of loose spirals that rise diagonally up and to the right. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft tonal shading on the body and lighter pink wash on the tail, set against slightly reddened skin.

Captain Foy in room four swore the grin stayed in the hallway a full minute after the rest of the cat had gone, hanging over the coat hooks like a slice of lamplight. Miss Ada Lusk tried to shoo him out with a broom, and he simply unrolled onto the windowsill, tail first, and told her the sea had got the weather wrong. He had a way of being right about things nobody had asked him, and a worse way of being there when the rent went missing.
So when the new lodger came down the stairs last Michaelmas with a face like a shut shop, I left the spare key on its hook and set the kettle on. A cat that grins that wide has seen the whole house and knows what it's worth keeping. Next morning the key was gone, the kettle was cold, and on the back page of the ledger, in pink chalk, someone had drawn a spiral that curled off the edge of the paper and kept on going.
