Cheshire Cat with spiral body on thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A grinning cat head with blue eyes, black ears and whiskers sits above a large purple and pink spiral that forms its body, with a dotted, striped tail curling beneath. The lines are bold and solid in the spiral and the tail is built from broken segments, with flat colour fills and no visible shading. The design is shown on the outer upper thigh against a pale background, with the subject centred and fully in frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mabel Tuttle had been sweeping the same flagstones of the Fenwick hedge maze for thirty years, and she knew the cat the way you know a draught. It came out of the yew at the turn of the afternoon, all teeth and no body, and grinned at her from a height where no cat should sit. 'You're late,' she said, because it was always late, and it always took the same route, round the sundial and back through the wicket gate that only opened inward.

The spiral was new this spring. Where the cat's body should have been there was a coil of violet and rose, wound tight as a watch spring, and the tail trailed off it in dashes, pink and purple, like a line of stitches someone had lost count of. The Duchess had ordered the maze re-cut into a labyrinth, and the cat would walk no path but the coil. Each morning the gardeners found the turf cut in curls that led nowhere but inward.

Mabel followed it one dusk with a ball of twine tied at the gate. The coil took her to the centre, where a stone bench held a teapot still warm and two cups, one of them chipped, and nobody sitting at either. The cat's blue eyes blinked over the rim of the pot. 'Sit down,' it said. 'You've come the long way, which is the only way in here.' She did not sit. She wound the twine round her wrist instead, and the grin widened.

When she came out at dawn the gate was shut and the twine ran back to the bench, tied in a neat bow around the stone. Mabel left it there. The gardeners say the spiral tightens a little each season, and that the cat has never once been seen walking a path straight. Now there are two cups on the bench most mornings, both still warm, and Mabel has stopped taking the chipped one.
