Cartoon cat with pink bow on a lower limb

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat face with a large pink bow on its head, blue eyes with lashes, a small pink nose and whiskers drawn in black outline. The bold black linework is softly shaded, with pink wash on the bow, ears and cheeks and blue fill in the eyes. The design is centred on pale skin, with a shiny silver surface behind the limb.

Right, settle down, all of you. Yes, you at the back, I can see the crisps. Some of you have grandchildren now and I am still the only one who knows where the tuck shop key went. So listen, because this is about Constance.

Constance belonged to Mrs Pollard, who kept the coat cupboard at Hollins Road like a small, strict kingdom. She was white as a laundered sheet, with blue eyes that looked straight through the register, and every Monday morning Mrs Pollard tied a pink ribbon in a bow under her chin. Nobody touched that ribbon. Nobody dared. Then the harvest money went missing from the biscuit tin, and it was Constance who sat on the windowsill and stared at the cupboard until somebody bothered to look.

We all looked at Terry Fenwick first, naturally, because he had jam on his jumper. Mrs Pollard looked at the ceiling and sighed. But Constance padded the length of the cupboard, past the wellies and the lost gloves, and sat squarely in front of Gordon Tate's satchel, the one he'd been so careful never to put down. She batted at the buckle until it gave. Out slid a cardboard tube of two-pence pieces, wrapped in a pink hanky he'd nicked from his mum. Gordon Tate, who is now a bank manager, I'm told, and who has been very quiet this evening.

Nobody ever found out why Constance chose that moment to move. Mrs Pollard swore she never trained her to it. She retired the ribbon after that and pinned it to the inside of the cupboard door, and I like to think it's still there. So when you go home tonight, check under your coat hooks. Somebody always knows more than they say. Gordon, pass those crisps down to the front. Constance would want a fair share.
