Chevron band with heart on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of the inner forearm showing a narrow band of chevron stripes in pink, red and peach, ending in a small solid pink heart near the wrist. The linework is fine and the colour fills are soft and even, with the band sitting horizontally across the skin. A rolled-up checked sleeve and a grey garment frame the arm against a pale background.

Dear Marguerite,

The lift on Carrow House has been out since Tuesday, so I have taken to counting the stairs as a sort of penance. Fourteen floors, one hundred and eighty-eight steps by my reckoning, though Mrs Adeyemi on the ninth says it is nearer two hundred. She has been teaching me to knit on the landing, which is how I came to be sitting on the cold concrete with a ball of wool in my lap when the caretaker came past with his bucket.
The wool is the reason for this letter. You will remember the scarf you abandoned in the back of the Fiat, the stripes going pink, then coral, then that peachy colour you swore was called dying salmon. Mrs Adeyemi says the pattern is called chevron, arrows stacked on top of each other, and that you only need to know two stitches to make it. She was right. By the third row I had a band of little arrowheads, and at the end of it I had dropped a stitch and made a heart by accident, a lumpy solid thing that I have decided to keep.
I have been wearing the strip as a wristlet under my cardigan. Nobody has asked about it, which in this building counts as admiration. Tell Dad I am eating properly and that the pigeons on the balcony have names now. Ring me Sunday, after the lift is fixed, so I can tell you about the ninth floor's wedding cake.
Love, Hen
